Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise when she was a child. Aunt Denise was a nurse who was a night shift worker so she could dedicate her time to art literature and theatre. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that the arts can serve as a tool for activism. DuVernay grew up with her mother who was socially conscious and taught her to make use of art as a method of expressing herself. DuVernay was a resident of Compton throughout her childhood, but she was able to spend summers with her father's extended family living in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's recollects seeing the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was inspired by the summers she spent in Selma, and later directed an documentary on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and earned degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began to produce for broadcast journalism while she was still at the college. She began her career working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the responsibility of looking over the house and examining the waste of one of members of the juries. The tasks that she had to perform left her dissatisfied and, following her decision not to pursue a career in the field of journalism, she was able to move to the field of public relations. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a Junior Publicist shortly after graduating from college. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. Alongside PR, her agency also created a variety of lifestyle and promotional networks including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
